Summary Reports

The following reports review the various tobacco control laws and policy in effect for each state.

  • SLATI Overview
    • This report provides an overview of tobacco control laws and related information for all U.S. states and the District of Columbia in 12 key areas.
  • State Laws Restricting Smoking in Public Places, Government Buildings and Workplaces
    • Listing of states and the status of their smoking policy in regards to public places, government buildings and private workplaces.
  • State Laws Restricting Smoking by Location
    • This differs from the prior report by providing detailed information on the different types of places (gyms, public transit, restaurants etc.) covered by an individual state's law restricting smoking.  Specific policy details are also viewable, such as whether restrictions on smoking are required or if smoking is prohibited entirely.
  • State Tobacco Excise Taxes
    • Chart of current cigarette excise tax rates for each state, sorted both alphabetically and by tax rate.
  • Net Cigarette Tax Revenue Collected in Fiscal Year 2006
    • Summary of the total net revenue each state received from cigarette excise taxes in FY2006.
  • Preemptive State Tobacco Control Laws and Venues Affected
    • This report documents state laws that partially or totally prevent local communities from passing certain tobacco control laws that are stronger than the state law, and the specific places covered by preemption.  
  • State Smoker Protection Laws
    • A listing of states having current "smoker protection" laws in place, and the year in which they were last amended.  These are tobacco laws that prohibit  employers from discriminating against employees or prospective employees based on their use of tobacco products.
  • 2006 State Tobacco Legislation
    • This report summarizes tobacco control legislation passed into law by each state and the District of Columbia in calendar year 2006.
  • SLATI-at-a-Glance
    • For each state listed, statistics are shown for five tobacco issues related to the sale of tobacco products:  cigarette tax rate,  the rate of tax on smokeless tobacco products, the legal age for purchasing tobacco products, status on a state's restrictions on the distribution of tobacco product samples, and whether or not tobacco sales through vending machines are allowed.
  • Midterm Reports
    • This link will take you to the SLATI Midterm Reports page where you can view the archives of past State Legislated Actions on Tobacco Issues Midterm Updates, each one providing a mid-year update in the given year on state legislative activity on important tobacco control issues and relevant new studies and statistics on tobacco control laws and policies.
